From your district
to the world

Every Indian international started at a district meet. This is the ladder: what each level is, the competitions at each one, who can enter, and how athletes get picked for the next step.

Start here

District level

District competitions are the first rung. They are run by district units of state sports associations, by district school games bodies, and by state sports departments through district rounds of state festivals. The top finishers are picked for state-level events, and SAI also uses district medals as a route into its selection trials.

How to enter

Join a school team, club or academy linked to your district association, and register through your school or the state sports portal before the deadline. Check age rules and carry proof of age.

Represent your state

State level

State competitions are run by state sports associations, state school games bodies and state sports departments. They decide who represents the state at national championships and national multi-sport games. Many national federations also require athletes to have competed in their state meet before entering national events.

How to enter

Qualify through your district event or trials, or enter the state association championship as a registered athlete. Most national entries are made by the state association, not by athletes directly.

International level

International events are where athletes represent India. National federations pick teams from trials and national championships, and the Indian Olympic Association or the Paralympic Committee of India enters teams for multi-sport games. For most events, athletes must also meet the international federation's qualification standards or rankings.

How to enter

Earn selection through your federation's trials, national championships and rankings. You cannot enter as an individual; the federation or national Olympic or Paralympic committee makes the entry.
